HALLEY'S COMET

Comet was the inspiration for Shy Lowen. He was the reason the sanctuary began. Born in 1986 his life was one of abuse and neglect and he had, understandably, become aggressive towards people.
He is now very loving and gives great hugs.
SHY LOWEN PERMANENT RESIDENTS - CAN YOU HELP?

There are times when horses and ponies are not suited to rehoming owing to their age or their health. These animals spend their lives being cared for at Shy Lowen.
You can help us care for them by choosing your favourite and sponsoring him or her. You can do this for as little as £10 per year but please give as much as you can.
In return you'll recieve a certificate, a photo and a letter from 'your' horse - you'll also have a warm glow inside from that great feeling that you've helped your favourite to have a good life.
TOM THUMB

Tom is the youngest of our permanent residents. He stays at the sanctuary because his front legs are twisted so his hooves face outwards. He is a very happy little person and has a huge heart. His courage and determination are an inspiration to everyone who meets him.
MYSTIC MOOSE

ex steeple chaser Moose was born on 18th April 1978. He had a serious bout of colic in 2006 which kept him at Leahurst Hospital for 12 days. He now has a carefully managed diet which involves his food being made like soup. Here he is enjoying his breakfast
FRED

Fred was a dressage horse who lost his career when he began to suffer inexplicable blackouts. Medical tests were unable to verify the cause but they appeared to be panic attacks.
He is now in good health and enjoys his retirement.
FOXY LADY

Foxy Lady was born in Ireland and was destined to be a racehorse. She didn't make the grade and became a failure statistic entering the spiral of sale rings and dealers. She was eventually bought by a lady who wanted to secure her future and was signed into Shy Lowen. Foxy had a successful eventing career in her loan home before she sustained an injury and was returned to the sanctuary in 2008. She is now retired.
PAZAZ

Pazaz was underweight on her arrival at Shy Lowen but when she gained weight she became unable to carry her weight on her hind legs. The vet advised that maintaining her with a body condition as on her picture here would allow her to enjoy her life. It is believed that she has suffered a fractured pelvis in her past which causes this problem.
TEDDY
Lives at Shy Lowen on a funded placement. He provides pony rides and raises funds for his needy friends.

BAILEY
Lives at Shy Lowen on a funded placement.
ANNIE

Annie arrived at Shy Lowen in July 2011. She is of undetermined age but is certainly a lot older than her passport claims! She was loaded in a trailor about to meet a fate which doesn't bear thinking about when a well-wisher stepped in at the 11th hour and arranged for Annie to come to Shy Lowen. She has clearly had some happy times in her life before things had gone wrong for her and Annie is  gradually remembering how to enjoy her life and relax again. A real life Black Beauty story.
CURLY

Curly is a stalwart at Shy Lowen. An ex- showjumper he enjoys teaching the Care Committee young people how to jump. He has a zest for life and regularly fund raises by providing pony rides. In December 2011 he did pony rides for the children of armed forces engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also takes part in the Equine Assisted Learning and Equine Assisted Therapy sessions facilitated at the sanctuary
CAMILLA

Camilla is a friendly pony who does lots for the special needs children who attend the sanctuary. She provides pony rides and she gives gentle feedback to young people who are learning how to care for her.
MARNEY

Marney is a little pony with a huge character. She arrived with a reputation for being unmanagable, difficult and aggressive but had a known past of abuse and pain. She is a little dream. She's helped young Care Committee members with their riding skills and she's done lots of work with special needs children.
ROLO

Rolo is a beautiful chestnut welsh cob. He has an injury to a hind leg which means he cannot do much work and so he cannot be rehomed. He helps with special needs children and the educational programmes at Shy Lowen.
BRACKEN

Bracken is a cross bred fell pony who now has Cushings disease. For this reason he is remaining at Shy Lowen. He is excellent at teaching young people to ride and as he is technically a horse at 14.3hh rather than a pony he often provides that all important 'first horse ride' experience.
